Visitors at LU Researchers’ Night Discovered Their Inner Geographer Gene
On 27 September, the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, University of Latvia (LU), invited visitors of all ages to the Researchers’ Night event “Discover Your Inner Geographer Gene!”.
Participants had the opportunity not only to explore the behind-the-scenes aspects of a geographer’s profession, but also to take part in creative and engaging activities held on the 3rd and 7th floors of the faculty building (rooms 335, 336, and 702).
The event also welcomed international students currently studying in Latvia within various exchange programmes.
Visitors enthusiastically took part in the geographers’ photo corner, participated in a quiz, searched for humorous place names on the map of Latvia, and discussed what geographers actually do and what their daily work looks like.
A special highlight of the Researchers’ Night programme was the guest lecture by LU Honorary Doctor and Emeritus Professor Russell King, focusing on migration research. The lecture, held in room 702 on the 7th floor, attracted great interest and sparked an engaging discussion on migration processes in Europe and their impact on society.
The activity was based on work from the COST Action “European Network on International Student Mobility: Connecting Research and Practice (ENIS), CA20115”, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) and the Latvian Council of Science, within the project “International student mobility towards offbeat destinations: geography, demographic profile and lived experiences in Latvia” (project No. lzp-2024/1-0556).
